Flip Video Mino HD

By The HT Guys • Apr 22, 4:24pm

The first thing you notice when you open the Mino HD is how small it is. It measures 3.94" x 1.97" x 0.63" (10 x 5 x 1.6 cm) and weighs only 3.3 ounces. Easily smaller than an iPod or PDA, in fact smaller than most cell phones and digital still cameras; the Mino HD is incredibly portable. Also included in the box are a wrist strap, a carry case and an A/V cable (composite video and stereo audio).

Using the Mino is a snap. It recharges via...

Yamaha YSP-4000

By The HT Guys • Apr 20, 4:19pm

We first saw the Yamaha YSP-4000 Sound Projector in use at CES 2007. At that time we were quite impressed that a single unit could generate a 5.1 sound field. For those of you who are not familiar with what the Yamaha Sound Projector, it is single unit resembling an oversized center channel that decodes surround sound and generates multi-channel experience by bouncing sound waves off the walls in your room. The advantages are obvious...

Logitech Squeezebox Duet

By The HT Guys • Apr 17, 4:15pm

There are quite a few solutions on the market for wireless digital audio. When Logitech acquired Slim Devices a couple years ago, they jumped into the fray with the Squeezebox line of products. Logitech quickly turned out their own twist on the product line, the Squeezebox Duet. We've had one in the HT Guys lab for quite a while and recently got the chance to plug it in, power it on and give it a listen.

According to the Logitech Website, the Squeezebox Duet lets you...

Revisiting the Component Approach to Audio/Video in Today’s Home Theater Market

By Robert A. Fowkes • Apr 16, 4:24pm

Over two years ago I wrote an article titled A New Approach to Components in a Digital Audio/Video World to share my thoughts regarding equipment options in Home Theater and related electronics. At that time I outlined the reasons that components might provide a better overall solution to an all-in-one box in terms of upgradability, performance and sometimes even price. Basically, the upside focused on the ability to upgrade as needed without replacing perfectly adequate and functional parts and the downside involved more boxes and wires than the alternative. While that's a gross simplification of the whole hypothesis you can review the entire argument by referring to the original article.

The basic principles of that paper still apply but a lot has changed over the past two years...

Ed's View - HD Radio in HD

By Ed Milbourn • Apr 1, 3:55pm

When working for Sirius Satellite Radio (now Sirius-XM), I was asked to attend a seminar in Newark, N.J., sponsored by iBiquity, the developer of the HD Radio standard. I was uninformed as to the purpose of the seminar and assumed it was a "spy" mission.

With the invitation in my hot little hand, I presented myself at the conference room sign-in desk. Since the HD radio group considered Satellite radio the mortal enemy, I was greeted with a lot of upturned eyebrows and numerous whispers.

I discovered that...

Ed's View - Better Broadcast HDTV

By Ed Milbourn • Mar 26, 3:49pm

I am sure most of you have experienced the superb HD picture offered by Blu-ray discs, and wonder why over-the air (OTA) HD broadcast do not exhibit the same quality. The answer to this question is compound and has been discussed in similar blurbs on this subject. However, one of the broadcasters' limitations to optimizing HDTV is inherent in the ATSC standard itself, and that is the obsolete MPEG-2 compression system.

When the digital (HD or SD) signal is originally digitized...
